Relationship between jihad & Dawah........5

Mainwhile before I go further, I would like to define the meaning of each of the following words.

 (I) JIHAD

The word Jihad in Arabic is derived from jahd or juhd literally meaning ability, effort, endeaviur, exertion of power. Meanwhile jahid and mujahadah means the exerting of ones power and effort. Another explanation of jihad is that the word jihad is the infinitive noun of jahada, yujahidu, jihad. This signifies the using or exerting of ones utmost power, effort, endeavours or ability in contending with an object of disapprobation.

According to the Islamic point of view, which is based on the Quran and sunnah, jihad means to strive to the utmost to gain and achieve ones goal. Jihad does not only revolve around aspect of war and terror, but rather repersenps a total effort to bring about Islamic revival.

Ibn Rushd maintain that Jihad is an all-round struggle and makes it obigatory, for a muslim to exercise all his powers, in the form of intellectual or physical capacities, or his gift of speech or his moral strength, courage and steadfastness in the face of hardship and his wirldly riches.

According to Ibn al-Qyyim in his book Zad al-maad, there are thirteen (13) kind of jihad which can be divided into four (4) main categories. Namely:

(a) Jihad Against oneself (al-nafs)

(b) Jihad Against satan (al-shaytan)

(c) Jihad Against the disobedient),(fasiqs)

(d) Jihad Against unbelievers(kafirs)

For better understanding, let me explain each and every one of this words regarding the following.

            (A) Jihad against oneself (al-nafs), this jihad is an effort directed upon oneself for the attainment of moral and spiritual purification (tazkiyah), so that he strives to purify himself from evil desires and inclination, and to turn away from disobedience, and the to give guidance to follow the commandment of Allah.

2

Thus, jihad against oneself is the first rank of all the jihad, it is put before jihad against the enemies; the Prophet called this jihad as the greatest jihad he

said to a group of people who had just return from the battle, you all came from good advent; you all came from the lesser jihad jihad asghar to the greatest jihad

jihad akbar. Also to improve one understanding of the Islam teaching and to put them into practice, to move to impaet this to other people (DaWah). This kind of jihad is mentioned in the Quran. This kind of jihad is the most difficult one for the muslim musiness evil desire and inclination are always in conflict with requirement of faith and commandments of Allah. The Prophet said: The worstfor your enemies is yourself within you, and the Quran said about the story of Joseph, And Yet, I am not trying to obsolve myself, for verily, mans inner self does incite (him) to evil.

            (B) Jihad against satan (al-shaytan), Satan has always tried to lead astray muslim from the correct path except the pious muslim. The Quran said: Indeed, Satan is our enemy; therefore, we should treat him as our enemy. He is inviting his followers towards his way so that they may jion the dwellers of Hell. His invitation  is just a lie and untruth; the Quran says: O believers, do not follow in satans footsteps, for he will incite to indecency and wickedness any will follow him.

Therefore the jihad against satan is a duty of every muslims; each individuals must fight against these satanic temptation which invite people falsehood, evil and calamity.

            (C) Jihad against disobedients (fasiqs), Muslim must strive to put under control the effort of the hypocrites and the disobedient. This is done in several ways, including debates or even by physical means if he has the capability to do so within his jurisdiction.

            (D) Jihad against Unbelievers (kafirs), Muslim must strive against unbelievers. This involves several means including debates, the use of ones possessions and even risking life; as the Quran said, And to encounter them, provide whatever force and trained ever-ready horses you can afford whereby you may strike terror into the enbemies of Allah and your enemies as well and other besides them whom you do not know but whom Allah knows. Muslims are to be always in readiness with the nescessary military equipment and an organised army, so that they may take military action immediately when required. The Prophet also told the muslims to do this jihad in several means including tongue (DaWah). Exert your utmost aganst unbelievers with your possessions, your lives and your tongue.

Jihad the life of Prophet Mohammad

War I Islam is not a casual phenomenon of violence. Mans striving (jihad) against all that is evil, whether in though or feeling or action, to establish Islam in the world, and it represent in muslim Law what is known as an honest struggle.

The word (jihad) is derived from the word jahada, waich means he exerted himself. Thus literally jihad means exertion, striving; but in juridico-religious sense, it signifies the exertion, of ones power to the utmost of ones capacity I the path of Allah. This is why the word jihad has been use as an antoym to the word Quud in Islam.

The word jihad is often confused with the word Quital (fijhting) and these are used in one and the same sense, whereas the Quran has made a clear distnction between them. Jihad fi-sabil Allah (fighting in the way of Allah) referes to an all-round struggle while the other signifies only one aspect of that struggle that is, fighting. The Holy Quran has clearly pointed out that jihad denots two kinds of striving; striving wit the help of Allah-given faculties, both mental and physical, and striving with the help of resources which he has at his command.

Ibn Rushd maintain that jihad is an all-round struggle and make it obligatory, for a Muslim to exercise all his power, in the form of intellectual or physical capacities, or his gift of speech or his moral strength, courage and steadfastness in the face of hardship and his worldly riches.

However, according to my understanding regarding  jihad, in respect of the many books that I went through, jihad is not used exclusively for fighting physically.

For example, talking to others to join Islam, in a way that will convice the individual to follow you, is a jihad. Pilgrimage (hajj) is a jihad, as the Prophet said, the hajj is

the most excellent of jihads. Even in the Quran we find that jihad is freely use in the context of exerting ones power and ability without implying WAR or aggression.

(2) THE MEANING OF DAWAH

Islamic dawah means as denoted before an invitation extended to humanity by Prophet Mohammad to believe in Islam. For the difination of Islamic dawah, we can understand that the word invitation is including admission, inviting, request, and call to come to Islam as faith and as a way of life, as al-din.

4

According to the Encyclopeadia of Islam, the word dawah in a politico- religious sense means invitation to adopt the cause of some individual of family claming the right to leadership over the muslim. Dawah which can often be translated as mission or propaganda.

Dawah in Arabic language gives a wide meaning, but all these are derived from the primary meaning of call or invitation. In the terminology of Islam, the word dawah is an invitation extended to humanity by the Prophets. From the Islamic point of view, the religion of all Prophets is Islam, and each Prophet has his own dawah. Among all the Prophets, Prophet Mohammad (may peace and blessing be upon him), his dawah was the last dawah among the Prophets; known as the Islamic dawah (al-Dawah al-Islamiyyah).

            The motive of  Islamic dawa

a. To show us the straight way

b. To invite others, what is good and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong

c. To call mankind unto the way of Allah

d. It is the  effort by muslims to enable other men to share and benefit from the                teaching of Islam.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JIHAD & dAWAH

War in Islam in not a casual phenomenon of violence. Mans striving (jihad) against all that is evil, whether in though or feeling or action, to establich Islam in the world, and it represent in muslim Law what is known as an honest struggle.

To fight against unbelievers was given to the muslims in the madina period. When the arrived madina and had a communal identity, the had to take up military action in

selfdefence. The was part off jihad. In the madina verses of Quran, the word is used in the wider sense of a struggle carried out by words or deeds of any kinds. defence and under well defind requirement and justification. This can be undertaken, only to restore peace and the freeom of the worshipper.

War in Islam is allowed provided there is a good reason for it and war is only allow under strict conditions and as a last resort to defend Islam against an attack of its enemies. War is only waged against combatants.

5

The Quran bears the clearest testimony to it, Permission (to fight) is given to those on whom war is made, because they are oppressed. Those who aer driven from their homes without a just cause except that say: Our lord is Allah.

Historical fact indicate that Islam spread in the peninsula of Arabia after the entrance of mecca, without any bloodshed, and only on the basis of Dawah. Dawah of Prophet was to proclam the oneness of God and the unity of mankind, and to guid humanity to the path of virtue and righteounes. This verse of the Quran is quit clear that there is no compulsion in religion, and the reason is mentioned in the following verse that the right course is clearly distinct from the wrong one. Jihad is not fighting against non-muslim.

Islam hates the desecration of anything even animals and plants. But Islam also treasures justice. Unjust deeds are distasteful.

However the relationship between jihad and dawah is very important to all muslims. To teach unbelievers person pescefully by bringing the individual into Islam, is dawah, but on the other hand it is jihad against the evil or satan. Also you who try to change the disobedient ones, it is da;wah. But if you try hard to teach and change the individuals peacefully and show them the truth way, then you have achieve the war of jihad against the evil. therefore it is not war that can be the only way to fight jihad. there are somany ways to fight jihad.
